India's promotion of Lakshadweep beaches for tourism is facing a backlash, and attacks on PM Modi are having unintended consequences in the Maldives.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit, Lakshadweep dominated Google trends in India for two days. This led to speculation that Indians are considering the nation's smallest Union Territory as their potential tourist destination.

Unexpectedly, PM Modi's promotion of Lakshadweep as a beach destination appears to have stirred discontent among the people of the Maldives, a well-established holiday hotspot for many Indians.

Subsequently, on Sunday, the residents of Maldives turned to social media to promote "#VisitMaldives". This followed PM Modi's visit to Lakshadweep, where he encouraged citizens to "embrace the adventurer in them" by exploring the Union territory.

India is actively promoting its beaches to boost tourism.

During the initial week of January, Prime Minister Modi toured Lakshadweep, sharing images that showcased the "stunning beauty of its islands." From engaging in "early morning walks" to attempting snorkeling, the Indian Prime Minister described his visit to the islands as "an enriching journey of learning and growing

Prior to this, Diu, an island situated near the Kathiyawad region coast at Veraval port, hosted its inaugural Beach Game Festival. The government organize the Diu Beach Games 2024, spanning from January 4 to 11.

The Administrator of Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli expressed confidence, stating to ANI, "I believe this initiative will foster the culture of beach games, showcase the sporting talents of the union territory, and enhance its tourism potential. The event is poised to attract both locals and tourists alike."

What is the reason behind Maldives' objection to the developments in Lakshadweep?

The surge in Lakshadweep's popularity following PM Modi's visit is causing concerns about its potential impact on tourism in the Maldives. Additionally, "derogatory" comments against PM Modi by certain political leaders in the Maldives have further intensified the situation.

Some political leaders in the island nation suspected that PM Modi's promotion of Lakshadweep was an effort to position the Union Territory as an alternative tourist destination or a perceived "competition" to the Maldives.
